Kalka railway authorities to withdraw supplementary train services to Shimla

With the winter holidays almost over and fewer tourists opting for the Kalka-Shimla toy train services, the railway authorities have decided to do away with the supplementary trains. The Kalka railway authorities had started a supplementary train in order to meet high demand during the year-end holiday rush.

V K Arora, Station Superintendent, Kalka, said, "The supplementary train was withdrawn on earlier this week. At present, most trains are running at capacities of 80-85 per cent, and this is likely to continue till the weekend.” Arora also said that the number of passengers was higher this season and the exact count would be confirmed when the data relating to the tickets booked online and those sold at the counters is compiled, according to a report by The Times of India. “We expect a lean period till the end of April,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Kalka-Shimla Toy train is set to be booked for foreign tourists as part of an agreement signed by Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation with an England-based company. A special train with 90 seats will be run on the heritage track.

Tourism Ministry planning seven religious tourism circuits across India

The Union Ministry of Tourism is planning to develop seven religious tourism circuits across the country. “India is home to a number of religions and there is huge scope in terms of boosting tourism to religious places,” Subodh Kant Sahai, Union Ministry of Tourism, India, said while speaking to the press today in New Delhi. The ministry will identify Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Jain, Sikh, Sufi and Sarva Dharma places, according to a report by cathnewsindia.com.

The ministry has taken up the matter with industry stakeholders and some Sufi exponents. It has identified 35 destinations for Phase I and will cover another 89 in Phase II. The minister said his ministry is preparing a detailed project report to identify religious destinations. The aim of the project, he added, is to facilitate a packaged tour-like experience for people who visit religious places. “We have already engaged consultants to work on these circuits and hope to engage state governments in the project,” he added.
